Can AI solve India’s real fake-news problem?

Fake news continues to rear its ugly head. A  majority of respondents to a recent Edelman survey, meanwhile, said that they couldn’t judge the veracity of media reports.  given that fake news has been shown to  spread faster  than real news, it’s no surprise that almost seven in ten people are concerned it might be used as a “weapon.” Researchers at MIT have  engineered a  partial solution where in they  describe an artificially intelligent (AI) system that can determine whether a source is accurate or politically prejudiced. .  A [promising] way to fight ‘fake news’ is to focus on their source The AI system relies on broad contextual understanding of the mediums it evaluates. It’s built on a Support Vector Machine (SVM) — a supervised system commonly used for classification and regression analysis — that was trained to evaluate factuality and bias on a three-point (low, mixed, and high---  65 percent accurate ) and seven-point scale (extreme-left, left, center-left, center, ce

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Image
Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a machine or a computer program to 'think' and 'learn' a complicated task, just like the way humans do, by repeated sequences of trail and error. We might have heard about the term Artificial Intelligence too much recently. But what is it and what should we know about it? Well, the term itself  "Artificial Intelligence" was coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to indicate a sub branch of computer science. The machines can be made intelligent by making them interact with their environment and when it receives data back it interprets this data in a manner considered intelligent. When someone mentions “artificial intelligence”(AI), what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Most of us imagine an army of human-like robots rebelling against humanity, while a few—folks from a more positive thinking community—are envisioning a bright future where AI serves them in all possible ways from walking a dog earl

Religious condition - Emergence of religious movements.

Emergence of religious movements The sixth century B.C. is considered a wonderful century in history. Great thinkers like Buddha, Mahavira, Heraclitus, Zoroaster, Confucius and Lao Tse lived and preached their ideas in this century. In India, the Republican institutions were strong in the 6th century B.C. This enabled rise of heterodox sects against the orthodox religion dominated by rites and rituals . Among them the most successful were Jainism and Buddhism whose impact on the Indian society was remarkable. Causes for the Rise of Jainism and Buddhism The primary cause for the rise of Jainism and Buddhism was the religious unrest in India in the 6th century B.C. The complex rituals and sacrifices advocated in the Later Vedic period were not acceptable to the common people. The sacrificial ceremonies were also found to be too expensive. The superstitious beliefs and mantras confused the people. The teachings of Upanishads, an alternative to the system of sacrifices, w

Evolution of Varna, Jati/Caste system

Class, Caste and Occupation The caste system is a classification of people into four hierarchically ranked castes called varnas . They are classified according to occupation and determine access to wealth , power , and privilege . The Brahmans , usually priests and scholars , are at the top. Next are the Kshatriyas , or political rulers and soldiers . They are followed by the Vaishyas , or merchants , and the fourth are the Shudras , who are usually laborers , peasants, artisans, and servants . At the very bottom are those considered the untouchables . These individuals perform occupations that are considered unclean and polluting, such as scavenging and skinning dead animals and are considered outcastes.  Untouchables  are not considered to be included in the ranked castes . The four orders of society are believed to have originated from the self - sacrifice of Purusha -the creator, the primeval being and are mentioned in Rig Veda. There seems to be a constant upward and downward
